Practice Room Session: Slugworth – Northern Skies

Knowing not of Slugworth until catching them live earlier this year (for shame!), I was instantly sucked in by the insanity of their music. Some incredible mixture of “technically incredible” and “a bunch of guys having fun writing songs”, their performance had a huge grin across the width of my face for the whole set. Interesting structures, vocal ranges which would given Patton a run for his money and (now) samples a plenty, there’s something for all, really! First formed in 1996, with a hiatus between 2002 and 2012 and a new EP released this year, the new material sounds nothing like anyone around right now. It’s therefore excellent to see them headlining the Main Stage of Colchester Free Festival on the Sunday this year! I can’t think of anyone who’d be as up for the task of putting fun into Sunday evening!

We rudely interrupted the band as they practiced some of their tunes this week, filming Northern Skies off of this year’s 3P EP, which you can watch below. It’s worth noting that, while the humour in their performance remains, they sound much better live! Get down to the Colchester Free Festival show or their show at Three Wise Monkeys on August 7th and find out for yourself.
