Kanye West announced for Glastonbury

In news which some people may have seen coming, Glastonbury have announced that they will be play host to a headline set from the man with the ego, Kanye West. West, who will be releasing his eighth album, So Help Me God, this summer, will be performing on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday evening at the festival.

To some people this may be seen as an odd choice, however after Jay Z won over fans in 2008 after backlash from such ‘talent’ as Oasis, it’s hardly unorthodox for a Pyramid Headliner to come from the world of hip hop.

The announcement last night, via the festival Twitter feed, as well as Kanye’s own, has received mixed reactions, over 1000 people so far (a tiny fraction of Glastonbury attendees) having signed the Change.org petition, ‘Cancel Kanye West’s headline slot and get a rock band‘, which claims: “Kanye West is an insult to music fans all over the world. We spend hundreds of pounds to attend glasto, and by doing so, expect a certain level of entertainment.” I’m not likely to be the first person to defend the decision but t0 claim that by putting on Kanye, who has admittedly written a fair few good songs (even if his persona does portray him as an unlikeable egomaniac child), equates to the festival not providing a certain level of entertainment is frankly ridiculous. Glastonbury is one of the few festivals which consistently delivers, both in quality and quantity. So there’s a person you don’t like performing on the main stage Saturday night? Oh well, perhaps go to one of the dozens of other stages during that time? There are still hundreds of artists to be announced; chill out, perhaps prepare to discover something new.
