Friday Mixtape: Rubato

This week our Friday mixtape comes from Rubato who released their debut single ‘Prelude with Attitude‘ last week

Dog shelter – Burial
An amazing theme by a great producer. Burial is a master of cinematic soundscapes, drama and textures. This track ievokes all kind of emotion such as melancholy and nostalgia.

Pieces Froides – D’une maniere tres particuliere – Erik Satie
Satie was always considered as an outsider of his time and as a result was not deemed as a real composer by many of his colleges. Nevertheless, he is without a doubt a key inspiration for Rubato and I particularly admire his use of minimalism and tonal exploration, often using unique and unheard of modal schemes.

Rostro – Murcof
A classic by Mexican producer Murcof. This tune is a beautiful blend of the digital and the organic, creatively developing dynamic range using musical pauses to create space.

Rachel’s Song – Vangelis

I think this tune didn’t even make it to the final cut, which is a great shame. However, the beautiful synth harmonies and mesmerising angelic vocals make it an accomplished piece of music in its own right.

Dead Skin Cells – The Future Sound Of London
I grew up on this record – still sounds fresh today. Very visual music, telling stories without words.

Tree Of Life – Clint Mansell
Mansell is definitely one of my favourite modern day film composers. Despite lacking classical training, which in some cases I consider as a blessing, Mansell constructs no-frills thematic music that goes directly to the heart. The film (The Fountain) is also pretty underrated in my opinion.

Dayvan Cowboy – Boards Of Canada
A modern electronic classic. This track takes me on a journey of sounds and landscapes. A perfect blend of all the elements of music and audio.

Carnival of The Animals – The Swan – Camille Sait-Saens –Clara Rockmore
A stand-out arrangement of this beautiful piece, scored for Theremin and piano. Clara Rockmore’s performance is simply divine, making an awkward and cliché-ridden musical instrument wail like a human voice. Inspiring.

Radar – Hauschka
Hauschka writes great, yet accessible themes using intricate prepared piano rhythms and simple melodies.

Moon – Alva Noto, Ryuichi Sakamoto
This is a great collaboration between two legends, Noto and Sakamoto. Very minimalistic in composition, yet the glitched electronics merged with the Piano creates a particularly unmistakeable sound.
