Track of the Day: Gengahr – Powder

Now here is a first for our Track of the Day section: we’re featuring a band for a second time. Normally I go out of my way to not feature a band repeatedly– after all, that’d make for a really dull feature otherwise. But when it comes to this absolute gem from Gengahr, you just can’t turn your nose up at it on principle.

With Gengahr’s previous efforts we’ve been exposed to the ghostly vocals and eerily infectious melodies, but ‘Powder‘ seems to be born out of a different place. Don’t get me wrong, we still have the unsettling falsetto vocals that float above all the instrumentation and doesn’t even slightly cast a shadow and we still have the same level of contagion buried in their guitars. But this time Gengahr have decided not to haunt from afar and instead have come straight at your consciousness and decided to battle* for space.

From the outset ‘Powder‘ is louder and more forceful than the likes of ‘She’s A Witch‘ or ‘Fill My Gums With Blood‘. Though retaining licks not unlike Foxygen and Unknown Mortal Orchestra in the verses, it’s the chorus where ‘Powder‘ resolves itself into a solid wall of sound that is just as infectious as its’ predecessors.

It seems as though Gengahr are evolving* into something stronger and ready to fight its’ way to the top.

*Why yes, these are poor attempts at  Pokemon puns. Thanks for noticing.
