Track of the Day: CLAWS – Melt

Norwich is a relatively quaint cathedral city. Its rich history dates back to 43AD and its main tourist attractions come in the form of ancient infrastructure. It’s home to TV’s biggest fictional dolt Alan Partridge and it sits just inland of England’s easternmost point. You might be able to pick up a few surfing lessons in Great Yarmouth but it is, geographically and through its culture, a huge distance apart from West Coast USA.

Yet, exploding out of the same area, CLAWS’ latest track ‘Melt’ is a noisy slice of brazen surf-punk that wears its US influences with pride. Its lo-fi production, thundering drums and screeching guitar trigger vivid memories of California’s Wavves, FIDLAR et al.

Despite their influences being clearly in play, the quartet don’t worry about sounding like things you’ve heard before and why should you when they’ve created 3 minutes of relentless, raucous fun that you’ll remember regardless?

The whole thing sounds like it could collapse at any point, but somehow remains melodic from start to finish – through all the noise, there’s a riff that your brain will latch onto whilst it tries to memorise vocalist Josie Steward’s input so you can shout along once the repeat button’s done its job.
