Kassassin Street – The Royal Handkerchief Ballet

Last year at Southsea Festival, the New Music Team headed to The Wedge to see MT and happened across the Southsea quintet Kassassin Street. It turned out to be a very lucky happening for us to see the band in action– psychedelic and energetic, it seemed as though they were poised to make their leap out into the music industry with a technicolour splash.

Funnily enough, that’s exactly what their debut single ‘The Royal Handkerchief Ballet‘ does– it showers you in a fine mist of their Eastern-infused melodies and soaks into your consciousness. Though I’m not particularly sure what a Handkerchief Ballet is– or even what a Royal one is for that matter– that doesn’t detract from the fact that this song is ridiculously catchy. The guitar melodies are practically oozing colourful funk that feels hedonistic right from the start. Mix this with some exotic percussion and other instrumentation, it conjures up a balmy haze of  far off climes.

The Royal Handkerchief Ballet‘ is like dancing your way through a incense kaleidoscope of indie-psych and if you don’t end up tapping your foot along then there is seriously something wrong with you.
