Wolf Gang – Last Bayou

The first article I wrote as part of the 7Bit Team was an interview with the lead singer of the band that today’s track of day comes from. Back then, Max McEllingott had said that they were in the ‘embryonic stages of an album‘. As is all too familiar in the industry though, delays started cropping up and, by last autumn, I thought all hope was lost. But then, seemingly out of nowhere, the Black River EP appeared and it has proven itself to be more than worth the wait.

Possibly the highlight of the EP is the final track ‘Last Bayou‘, which is why it made the TOTD cut. Wolf Gang have always been reaching higher, creating a sound ready for the arenas; but it appears that their stint with the likes of Coldplay and Keane have pushed Wolf Gang to new, dizzier heights. This track is ready for stadium-sized singalongs; ready for people to raise their arms and voices in unison to accompany McEllingott’s vocals up and over London.

Musically, there’s the echoes of the dreamscape of debut Suego Faults, but the dream is even more prominent. It is beautifully fuzzed, a pastel sunset reflecting back off the water. There’s less electronics, with more prominence lent to their euphoric, catchy guitar hooks which soar up and burn more intensely during the choruses. It certainly reaffirms that it was an excellent move to take Wolf Gang from a solo to group endeavor– it’s made everything richer and allowed them to stretch their sound to incorporate elements of feel-good pop and dreamy-indie.

If Black River (which is out today) is a sample of what Wolf Gang have grown in to, it only seems like a matter of time before they find themselves reaching the heights that their sounds are built for.
