Singles Round Up 4th November

Things have taken a turn for the cold and dark as we edged into November. Christmas is creeping ever further as we wind down to the end of 2013. Soon you’ll be seeing the round-up of best of’s for the year. But it’s not over yet, with lots of new songs coming out each week. Here’s our pick of this week’s bunch.

Dev Hynes has his writing finger in many successful collaboration pies, so it’s no surprise his name popped up in relation to singer Laura Welsh’s new single ‘Undiscovered’. Holding all the trademarks of a classic pop tune, it will have you grabbing your hairbrush and singing along. Laura is very much the vocal talent that would sit well with the likes of Adele. She packs a whole lot of soul into every word. You can tell this woman is one to watch for the coming year.

Japanese four piece Taffy are kindly making the final track on their album Lixiviate available to download for free. They remind me of the 90’s bands that would sit on the soundtrack of teenage movies like 10 Things I Hate About You. (Oh Heath Ledger *swoon*). ‘No Endings But Only Beginnings’ laments the loss of love through the sweetness of the vocals against the rockier hit of the guitars.

The spoken word has such power. When added to a musical accompaniment it adds a whole other dimension and gravity to those words. This is what Poeticat do so well. ‘Centre of the Concrete Square’ is a powerful track about the influences on young people. A pounding backing sound supported by haunting vocals creates a song of discovery.

For something more buoyant and up-beat, take Imaginary People’s Fresh On. Dylan Von Wagner is the vocalist providing the crooning to keep up with the rumbling bounce of the drums and piano keys. This track is taken from their self-titled EP and comes accompanied by a video that may make you a little dizzy in the brain!

The one man and his bedroom formula is still prominent as we can see in Cuz. Johnny Ryan creates music using an 8 track recorder, a karaoke mic and broken speakers! New single ‘So Tired’ shows how this can work in your favour. It’s a classic sounding song with fuzzy guitars and distorted Strokes-esque vocals.

We all love a good trilogy and it appears so does Falling Off Maps. They release their new single ‘Redeemer’ the second in a three part video tale. The first video in this story was for their single ‘Honest. Offbeat clapping toe tapping drums provide the accompaniment to the heart felt saddening guitar strums. The vocals sing a tale of trying to find the self in a sea of uncertainty.

Stripping it right back is Hana Kim with new single ‘Give It Up’. This is a love torn track, which places her emotional vocals at centre stage. The steady pound of the strings supports the heart wrenching lyrics. The track is taken from her new album ‘Exodo’ so if you like what you hear there will be plenty more coming your way.

The Witch Hunt have recently released their debut EP Little Book of Hate. ‘Army Man’ taken from this EP shows their dark, haunting side. Vocalist Louisa belts out howling vocals that would rival big hitters like Florence Welch in the power stakes! The foreboding sound of the drums as they creep and beat in the background adds to the lamenting song of war.
