Track of the Day: Dolomite Minor – Let Me Go

Since moving to Southampton a year ago (and oh, how the time has flown), I’ve watched our music scene come into its own and begin to truly blossom. We’ve seen Frank Turner going from strength-to-strength, so now Southamptoners can actually say ‘he came from here, y’know?‘ and receive actual interest from the statement. We’ve seen The Joiners go from borderline financial ruin to the site of some truly spectacular benefit gigs which culminated with the venue becoming the UK’s best small venue. And we’ve also seen a huge spike in the musical talent coming out– Mr Tom, Spectral Park, New Desert Blues and today’s track of the day stars: Dolomite Minor.

Let Me Go‘ is one of the duo’s first tracks to be unleashed into the musical wilderness after a summer that’s seen them venture outside Southampton; which included shows at Reading and T in the Park. It’s an unashamedly ballsy start– a raw, gritty modern rock song that’s as blustery as the weather outside is supposed to be (the most I’ve seen here today has been a wheelie bin in the middle of the road).

The track has echoes of The Black Keys, The White Stripes and Deap Vally about it– without really being too much of any of them. Because of those familiar elements, you’ll find yourself instantly drawn into ‘Let Me Go‘, but it’s the unique hooks that will keep you coming back… Like Joe Grimshaw’s grunge infused, bluesy drawl– which is equal parts infuriatingly calm and air punching fierce. Or the fact the pair deliver it with such a cool swagger that the only thing that tends to come to mind is leather jackets and sunglasses indoors.

Ultimately this is a track that is destined to make you sit up and pay attention to Dolomite Minor– they know how to  infuse blues and grunge into their minimalist rock substance and deliver it with style.
