Moiré – Never Sleep EP

London producer Moiré makes his debut here on Actress’ Werkdiscs label. As the title suggests we have a four tracker that draws influence from insomnia, the with the press release describing it as “obsessive expressions of a mind inspired by the city and the scene that has surrounded him”.

Lead track Lose It shares the same quality as the title of the EP as in it references exactly what it says on the tin. It’s about being in the club at the moment that everything clicks. A collaboration with vocalist Heidi Vogel, the track lays a solid, bassy foundation with a chunky drum beat along with prominent hi hats, as the vocal is repeated.  Moving through the track there is a change of pace slightly as we are taken down into a more sparse section, but the throbbing heart of the track remains before the heavy beat is dropped back in to rapturous effect. I guess this is the moment at which losing it is highly encouraged!!

Although difficult to classify as such it is easy to see this this getting lots of club play, particularly in sets earlier in the night as part of a warm up set, just before a night really kicks off. It has that reserved mark of quality that keeps it danceable without going past boiling point.

Moving on we have Drugs which begins with a more traditional techno/bass perspective, with driving  4/4 beats temporarily making way for a lovely deep, classic piano section. This moment of joy is short lived, but thoroughly satisfying as the solid 4/4 returns. The two sounds are quite a contrast, however work pretty well together when they are combined in the middle section of the track. This is definitely a more peak time track when compared with Lose It and shows a level of versatility not often seen in a debut EP. Of course the title is again pretty unambiguous!

Label owner Actress then gets in on the action providing a remix of Lose it, which takes the original and turns it into a bassier, higher BPM affair which is filled with cut up samples of the original vocals. This one is a real dj friendly (lengthy) stomper and is certainly ready to hit the more discerning dancefloors. Like the original, it bubbles under the surface with that high class echoed house sound and refrains from being completely over the top, whilst still being a wholly absorbing piece of music. First class.

Rounding off the EP is the fantastically deep Into, layered with a variety of gorgeous soundscapes that blend into yet another progressive, absorbing listen. This one is available for free download over at http://www.werkdiscs.com/moire/ when you sign up to the label’s mailing list. It is highly recommended you get hold of not only the free track but the entire EP!

All that is left to be said is if this is the only the debut release from Moiré it suggests there could, nay, should be a very bright future ahead for him indeed. This comes very highly recommended for discerning DJ’s and fans of forward thinking electronic music, especially anyone who enjoys house, bass, techno and everything in between.
