Dems – Birthdays – London Review

The short set fused live sonics, beats, vocals and guitar parts, alivening and awakening a escapism which never breaks.

Right in front of me here are a band that know that in this age of music, having an artistic and visual style is just as capital as the music itself. Collectively these two halves can form an artistry and Dems have this locked down perfectly on every part.

Dems Birthdays, like, Dems in London

Performing at one of Londons most hidden haunts, Birthdays is nestled deep in the east end of Dalston and tonight the city based trio take to the stage and celebrate the release of tracks new and old and even bigger things to come.

Beginning the set with ‘Inner O‘ this was the first track I heard from the band last summer and instantly fell completely in love with from the initial shimmers of the opening sounds. Inner O is gorgeously fused in melodic explosives, shifting in tempo with the vocal woozy, before imploding spectacularly in to marbling beats .

Assembled by experience, literature and art can be the root to inspiration which forms stories and music can take shape.

In this bands case with a glowing clarity like no other. As much as you can move to the melodic beats and ethereal sonics, the music Dems creates feels cleansed; woven with clarity and soul in a way which is rare to find. It’s unique to feel so awake with the dynamics but simultaneously so serene, however they manage it though, they do it good, almost inviting us to let go of the aches, the monotony and just be; to inhale what we hear and respond to it in whatever way we chose to.

Latest single Christabel, based on a poem of the same name was performed again with freshness, clarity and purity. when music is based on narrative you capture it and honour it which is exactly what’s been done here; melodic, rippling harmonies as the production of the track is subtle, graceful in vocal and integral in what these guys do.

Dems Live at Birthdays

A cover of the T2 tune a few years back Heartbroken was transformed almost recongnisably in to something of intent, tenderness and sincerity. This track was made for the trio to rework and make their own. Dan Moss’ vocal is impressive, reposed with intertwining rhythms, the lyrics are felt.

Down on You and House represent what Dems create best, colliding sonics with rawness, loopings and chopped up samplings. The creations of each track thrives; not only in what we’ve heard tonight but is also dem-onstrated in their remix work, videos and pennings and debuting project Desire looks to be no different.

Dems confirm the belief more and more that music can be art and is art. It can collide and collage with colours, shapes and vibes. These guys affirm this with absolutness and best of all in the most humble, beautiful and magical way it can be. Sonics laced with fragility and lingering presence and artists that genuinely do what they do for the love of their way of making music and sharing it with the lucky few that have let this band in.
