Band of the Day: Morten Myklebust

Who is Morten Myklebust. Check the video below.

It’s always a pleasure to listen to more musicians like Jack Johnson. His brand of studio-quality honest busker sound is something pretty infallible, and while I wouldn’t consider a Norwegian ‘well-kept secret’ Morten Myklebust to be an intentional carbon-copy, you can’t help but notice – and subsequently appreciate – the similarity.

Morten Myklebust is a folkists dream

Myklebust’s self-titled debut – already out in places but penned down for a worldwide release next year – is quite reminiscent of In Between Dreams in places, particularly at its most delicate. It wouldn’t be too contentious for me to declare it a better release though – and that’s coming from someone who’s spent many hours listening to Johnson’s third album – and that’s down in part to Myklebust’s voice which while softer is even stronger and more emotive.

The softness extends to the way he gently strums and plucks his acoustic guitar across most of the whole record; think Johnson’s ‘Better Together’ or even Joshua Radin’s ‘Winter’ for an idea of what kind of level of intensity occurs through most of Myklebust’s album. There are rare instances though – such as during the climax of ‘Over The Sea’ – where there is a forcefulness in either drums or more fervent strumming to match greater vocal intensity.

These moments – along with ‘Away’, where Myklebust performs a gorgeous duet with Susanne Sundfør – do add a laudable depth and diversity yet even without them, Morten Myklebust is a delightful and evocative record that imbues a true state of serenity.
