Band of the Day: Velcro Hooks

You do get the impression the chaps behind the Velcro Hooks sound have a love/hate quality to them. I love ’em – I’ll happily spread ‘Wasabi Colonel’ all over a bagel – but they’re of the ironically rambunctious slacker persuasion, and that inherently won’t sit right with some.

They’ve approached their inception in a rather refreshing, makeshift way though, so if you don’t love them you may still respect them for their intentions. Marking the internet as a largely irrelevant entity, they chose instead to put on an array of gigs in the Bristol area where they’re currently located for free and have a jolly good time doing so. They’ve probably played elsewhere too, but I’d have to ask them to find out…

They’ve obviously decided that with a debut EP on the way, updating their image to incorporate the vast, monstrous digital behemoth that is the World Wide Web may prove to be a good move in the long run. ‘Free shows and house parties’ can only sustain a band for so long.

You can stream a couple of songs from Gymnophoria on Soundcloud, but the whole EP is available on Bandcamp. This release should probably incite the four-piece to play more gigs in more places to more people, you’d hope. Since their first ever single ‘The Surfing Song’ strangely doesn’t appear on their first ever EP, live’s going to be the place to hear it. As is probably the case with everything else the band have produced thus far.

Unashamedly cavalier garage rock is arguably best heard in a scuzzy, dirty environment befitting the genre.
