Band of the Day: Vasa

Vasa – named intriguingly after a Swedish warship that sank during its maiden voyage – have a very daring soundscape, outstanding in its prominent construction and oft ferocious fluctuations. These Glaswegian quartet are one of the most exciting new music exports not just because they’re toying with convention, but because beneath the ‘loud and quiet noises’ lies the potential to be fundamental to a postmodern pure instrumental movement.

Songs without voices need melodies that carry the means to emote and narrate without words, and few bands I know have proved more capable of doing just that than Vasa. These guys aren’t just on to something exceptional, they are exceptional. As they gear up for an EP release all signs point to them doing something that, regardless of how many find them deep within the recesses of the internet, should be considered momentous.

I’ll leave you with their repertoire. ‘Cynthia’ may be the song with which they launch their career, but it’ll be their extraordinary demo ‘Empty Orchestra’ that evokes the strongest responses. Their EP Never Have Dreams is out on December 14th.
