Band of the Day: Sketches

Contrary to their Twitter bio, Sketches are quite the fashionable pop band; dare I call them ‘trendy’?

They were the support for Minus the Bear’s only headline show this year in a popular London nightclub, and they’ve a couple of gigs lined up next month in both Brussels and Liege. They compare their sound to the likes of Joy Division and Bloc Party, and their single Lover’s Liar is an irresistible exhibition of prevailing guitars and assertive vocals.

Sketches have got a sturdy three/four piece arrangement going for them, with charismatic frontman Luke Rogers front and centre with guitar in hands, while confident guitarist and bassist James McBrien and Matt Hutt create a charming front line. They’ve got purposeful drums to accompany, providing a weighty beat to their already strong arrangement.

They’ve been around for a few years working on perfecting their sound, fine-tuning it into something that you’d hope will leave a lasting impact on any around to hear it when it all comes flowing forth in the form of something quantifiable (ie. a debut album). I’ve been informed – by the band no less – that this year they’ve been recording some new tracks. If they were the ones I heard this month live then there should be no reason why you shouldn’t make a note to buy/download whatever comes after Lover’s Liar (stream/download option below).
