Band of the Day: Wot Gorilla?

I am reliably informed that the math rock genre is cool, a sentiment backed up by a love of Minus the Bear shared by multiple 7Bit staff. Intelligent intricacy within experimentation is what makes math rock, and its through following that definition and trying to be different that Wot Gorilla? become a shining example.

Formed in Halifax in 2008, this four piece produced a self-titled five track EP with the likes of ‘6 Double 5 3 2 1’, ‘QWERTY’, ‘We Go Way Back Like Spinal Cords And Car Seats’, ‘Cornelius’ and ’23’ proving to be the standout tracks… what do you mean, that’s all the songs on the EP?

Well I stand by my words, because the whole damn EP’s fantastic. The year after releasing this the band made their mark on BBC’s Introducing Stage at the Reading & Leeds Festival, before releasing their next EP ‘New Arrival’ in December. Simply put, this is a further statement of their excellence.

Aside from a single release in November and a few live gigs, 2011 proved to be pretty quiet for the band. This year however, they’re gearing up for an August release of their third album ‘Kebnekaise’ and have offered us all a taster with the single ‘Snow White‘ and a video to boot.

This single really helps to showcase the talents of all four guys, Mat Haigh’s high but strong subtly jesting vocals adding definition to the complexities of the rhythm provided by Ben Farnell, Jonny Hey and Si Marks on guitar, bass and drums respectively.

Wot Gorilla? are a band evidently full of confidence. August needs to come sooner so we can hear more of their work. If you want to have a look through their discography, it’s all free to download.
