Broken Hands Interview

We caught up with Broken Hands recently to prod and probe them and find the truth behind their Travelodge Love Story

In a nutshell, explain Broken Hands to our readers.

We’ve a conviction in what we perform and a drive as young men. Dynamic guitar R&B-pop songs with a some-time fuzz rhythm section.

Have you ever typed your name into Google and been shocked by the images that came up?

There is a photo of a teenager with both arms in plaster-cast. They have certainly learnt a valuable lesson in abstinence and perhaps honed their conversational skills. Silver-tongued devil.

Who is your direct inspiration and who(how?) do you think you would react if you met them?

We take inspiration from far too many places to list them. And it’s a constantly moving circle of inspiration. You’ll always hear about an artist you haven’t, see a doc on an artist you know or a tale of someone that did things their way. And we thrive taking in those forms of information, a good under-dog story’ll set anyone straight.

There have been a lot of bands that believe dubstep will save their career? If you ever found Broken Hands in need of a direction change, what genre would you try and combine with your sound?

The four of us, we have a way of working that lends a certain style of arrangement. But if we found ourselves at dead end. I think we’d just go somewhere quiet and learn something new and start from scratch. Don’t really have another great love outside of our bubble, it’s all fair game and we listen to most of it.

You have a strange video on your Youtube account about ‘Travelodge Celtic Romance’. Can you explain what this is about and do you have any other random tour stories?

‘Travelodge Celtic Romance’ is a morning somewhere near the Scottish border while touring with BoS. I guess it was a nice morning and Jamie was documenting his world from the comfort of a hard bed. It’s not all spilling milk.

How was it supporting BoS on tour?

Our first European and UK & Ireland tours were both with BoS. Thanks to those tours we’ve seen wonderful cities and met some wonderful people. They’re like-minded musicians and they’ve worked themselves bare to be where they are, we’re proud to have supported them and about 65% glad we met @willmtthws.

What are your plan for the next 12 months?

We’re headlining the Lexington, London on the 30th May this year as part of our UK tour (details on their site) and releasing single “If You Need To Lie” 28th of May which will be available from our website as well as live shows.

What are your views on seminal 60’s band The Kinks? Fro. @ashtonraze

They wrote some very great songs & lyrics. You’d be surprised how often the two aren’t combined.
